Introduction
Every blog post, product page, and article on the web has a URL — and the part after the last slash is called a slug. A clean slug is short, descriptive, and uses hyphens between words. Our free slug generator converts any title, phrase, or sentence into a perfectly formatted URL slug in one click.
What Is a URL Slug?
A URL slug is the human-readable identifier at the end of a web address. Take this example:
https://toolhivehub.com/blogs/slug-generator-guide
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is the slug
Slugs replace spaces with hyphens, strip punctuation and special characters, and use only lowercase letters. They make URLs readable, shareable, and easier for search engines to understand.

Why Good URL Slugs Matter
SEO
Search engines read the words in your URL as a relevance signal. A slug like /tools/url-slug-generator tells Google what that page is about before it even crawls the content. Stop words (a, the, and) don’t add signal, so it’s fine to omit them.
User experience
People scan URLs before clicking links — especially in email, chat, or shared documents where the link isn’t styled as a button. A clean slug like /blogs/how-to-bake-sourdough builds trust; a messy one like /p=1482?ref=home&src=email doesn’t.
Permanence
URLs are hard to change once indexed. A good slug chosen at publication can stay valid for years. A bad one is awkward to redirect and can cause broken links if you ever clean it up.
Best Practices for URL Slugs
Keep it short. Aim for 3–5 words that capture the core topic. Search engines truncate long URLs in results pages.
Use your primary keyword. If your page targets “best noise-cancelling headphones”, your slug should include those words: /best-noise-cancelling-headphones.
Remove stop words. Words like a, an, the, and, of, in, to add length without adding meaning. Drop them unless they’re part of a brand name or change the meaning significantly.
Avoid dates in slugs — unless essential. /2026/05/blog-post-title locks your content to a time period and makes evergreen content look stale. Use dates only for news or time-sensitive content.
Never use spaces or underscores. Spaces get URL-encoded as %20, which is ugly and can break in some clients. Underscores join words in Google’s eyes rather than separating them.
