Output Formats Explained

Which format to pick after converting from HEIC

JPG / JPEG
Best Compatibility

JPG is universally supported across every device, app, and platform. Ideal when you need to share photos on Windows PCs, Android devices, or older software that doesn't recognise HEIC. Quality 90%+ is visually indistinguishable from the HEIC original.

PNG
Lossless Quality

PNG preserves every pixel without lossy compression. Great when pixel-perfect quality matters — like screenshots, illustrations, or images you'll edit further. Files will be larger than JPG; not recommended for sharing large photo libraries.

WebP
Smallest Web Files

WebP produces 25–35% smaller files than JPG at equivalent quality. Perfect for uploading photos to websites, blogs, or e-commerce stores where page speed matters. Supported by all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge).

What is HEIC?
Apple's Default Format

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It stores photos at half the file size of JPG with the same visual quality. The catch: non-Apple devices and many apps still can't open HEIC files — that's why you're here.

All conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to any server — they stay private on your device. The heic2any library decodes HEIC/HEIF using pure JavaScript with no server round-trips.

FAQ

Common Questions

Why can't Windows open my HEIC photos?
HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) codec, which requires a paid licence on Windows. Microsoft sells a HEVC codec extension, but many users avoid it. Converting to JPG is the easiest cross-platform fix — JPG works everywhere without any extra software.
Will I lose quality converting HEIC to JPG?
At the default quality of 92%, the conversion is visually lossless for nearly all photos — the difference is imperceptible on screen. Both HEIC and JPG are lossy formats, so some theoretical quality is lost, but at high quality settings it's indistinguishable from the original. Use PNG output if you need truly lossless preservation.
Is there a file size or count limit?
There's no hard limit — the tool runs entirely in your browser and is only constrained by your device's available memory. For best performance, keep individual files under 30 MB and batches under 50 files. Large iPhone Pro RAW files can take a few seconds each.
Does this tool handle HEIF as well as HEIC?
Yes. HEIC is a profile of HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) — Apple uses the .heic extension while .heif is the generic container. Both are supported. The file picker accepts both extensions and the conversion library handles both transparently.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything happens locally in your browser using the heic2any JavaScript library. Your photos never leave your device and no data is transmitted to any server. You can even use this tool offline after the page has loaded.
How do I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. This switches the camera to save JPG instead of HEIC. Note: existing HEIC photos won't be retroactively converted — use this tool for those.
